2 charm packs-Soiree by Lila Tueller
1 1/2 yards white fabric for sashing/borders
1/2 yard fabric for binding
1 1/2 yards of fabric for backing
batting that measures 44" x 55"
quilting thread

please note: 1/4" seams are used throughout this project.
Cut each charm in half. This will yield 144 "coins". Each will measure 2.5" x 5". (You will use all but 12 coins for this quilt.)
Sew coins together. I found it very helpful to match the pinked edges with pinked edges and straight edges with straight edges when piecing.
Make 5 strips of coins. Each strip is made with 22 rectangles.
Cut 6 pieces of white fabric 3.5" wide x 44 1/2" long for the sashing.
If your seam allowances aren't completely accurate, you may want to measure the length of your patchwork strips and cut the sashing to match.
Sew sashing to the coin strips. Press all seams toward the white.
Cut 2 pieces 3.5" x 41" for the top and bottom of the quilt. 
Sew together and press well. 
Your quilt top is done!
For the back...
I love adding a patchwork detail to the back of my quilts. It takes a bit more time, but it's a nice way to tie in the design from the front to the back.
Join 22 coins together and press.
From the backing fabric, cut one piece 36" x width of fabric. And one piece 15" x width of fabric.
Layout as shown and sew together. Press.

I just love the one strip of patchwork on the backing. 
Wash and dry your quilt for that soft crinkly goodness. 
The finished quilt measures approximately 41" x 50".
This is a fun + quick project. I made it from start to finish in about 2 days. It's perfect for a last minute baby gift.

I love this pattern too, but is anyone else as annoyed as I am by those danged pinked edges on charm packs? It just makes it that much more difficult to sew an accurate 1/4" seam.

I just finished my FIRST EVER quilt and I couldn't have done it without you! Initially, I was going to do a ragged squares quilt out of my daughter's baby clothes -- for HER baby girl (due 8/4/09!) -- then opted for the stacked coins baby quilt. I have one question- do you stipple all over the quilt or only in the sash and border? And, you use white thread over the entire quilt- you see it on the coins too, right? Thanks for your help!

I do have a question about yardage for the sashing. It says 1 1/2 yd, I only ended up using about 3/4 yd. Did anyone else have this issue?

I agree-- this is a great last minute baby shower gift. I can never keep batting around though.. What type did you use for this one? I never seem to pick the right batting. Sometimes its too hot, sometimes it's too thin. I wish there was a blog about picking your batting... HELP.

I'm loving this quilt! I think I'm going to use her sugar pop charm pack since soiree is no longer available. What kind of batting did you use?
I have 2 hoopla charm packs but I don't think I have enough. I just started to quilt so I am not sure if all charm packs have 42 squares and I did not see any quantity, it just says 2 charm packs, help???
two charm packs of hoopla should be enough for this quilt.

I just completed my first Stacked Coins quilt. I have 2 more waiting to be basted and quilted.
Anyway, I love how they turned out. This first one is a gift for a friend and I have warned her that it is going to be very difficult for me to give the quilt away. Many thanks to you for the tutorial!
