I recently "inherited" this tablecloth from my Great Aunt. It's a simple tablecloth with ric rac trim that she would put out during BBQ's at their home and on Picnics. Everyone in attendance would sign and she would later embroider each signature. Such a great idea!
It inspired me to make my own version into a quilt. Don't ya love it! It's SUPER SIMPLE and will be so fun to have our friends and family sign it when we get together for our Camping Trips. 
The Ingredients are simple and so are the Instructions, so let's go! 
1 Jelly Roll
2 Yards of fabric for the front3 yards of fabric for the back
Jelly Roll Strips and Nine Patch pieces left over are used for the binding
Batting
1. Make 40-42 Nine Patch blocks
Making Nine Patch blocks is easy peasy.
a. Cut your Jelly Roll Strips in half.
b. You will need 2 strips of one fabric and 1 strip of a coordinating fabric for each set.
c. Sew strips together as shown below:
d. Cut sewn strips 2 1/2" wide as shown in photo below:
e. You'll end up with something like this:
f. Sew 2 1/2" wide pieces together as shown in photo below:
g. Tah Dah! A Nine Patch block. You'll need 40-42 blocks.
2. Sew 2 strips of 11 or 12 -Nine Patch blocks each.3. Sew 2 strips of 9 - Nine Patch blocks each.
Sew long strip(s) to long sides of front piece first.
Then sew shorter strip(s) to ends of front piece, matching Nine Patch blocks at ends.

Depending on your seams, and the actual length and width of your front piece, will depend whether you use 11 or 12 blocks on each long end. You'll have to measure and do a little math.Put top, batting and backing together and quilt as desired {I did a big grid first (to leave room for signing names) and then extra quilting on the borders}.
Use your left over strips and Nine Patch pieces and sew together end to end to create a binding. I usually do a 2 1/4" binding. But I just left the pieced binding at 2 1/2" and it turned out rather nicely.
Bind as desired and you're all done! Enjoy!

I started doing this when my granddaughter was born. It is now 13 years old and the signatures, poems, pictures and hand prints are something to share and smile at whenever THE CLOTH comes out.

My mom did this with a tablecloth for her dining room. She would embroider over the names and dates before she washed it.
Remind people to date their signatures. It is priceless to me now when I look at my great-grandparents' signatures from their visit to our house when I was just 5! A lot of memories on that tablecloth.

Such an awesome idea! Wished I would have though about something like this years ago when we attended family reunions. This would even be a blast to use for end of school year gift for teacher! But then...my guys are all grown up! UGH...thinking here...love the idea!!

My aunt embroidered signatures, notes & drawings that were made on a table cloth at each one of my family birthday parties!
I really wish I had started this tradition during our first Thanksgiving as a married couple... we're a military family and I think it would be such a treasure to look back and see all of the members of our "military family" we spent holidays with over the years, since we don't get home for the holidays(haven't been for 6 years!)

I love, love, LOVE this idea!! (Shows how much I lack in creativity to not have thought of something this simple and perfect on my own. . . . all the more reason I ADORE everything Moda!) The last few years I've been making tote bags as a gift from me to my kids' teachers. But what I really want to do is make a gift from the class to the teachers. Most ideas I came up required a bit too much on the parents' or kids' parts that I was afraid I'd get no participation. This is PERFECT!! I could even make it smaller as either a lap quilt or wall hanging. I like the bit about embroidering the names (I love handwork!). Thank you so much for this project!!
