Kristy's Dream Quilt

The highlight of this project was working with "A Morris Tapestry" fabric designed by Barbara Brackman. The colors and design of this fabric line is STUNNING! This is my second project for the Moda Bake Shop and I could not have enjoyed it more.

1 Layer Cake

3 yards for background, setting triangles, #8171-34

1/2 yard #8172-22 for border #1

2 3/4 yards 8175-11 for border #2

Backing, 5 1/2 yards #8176-11

Cutting Instructions:

Layer Cake

• From each layer cake 10" x 10" sheet, cut (5) 2" x 10" strips for a total of 210 strips (will use 204)

From Background, For Blocks and set-in triangles

• Cut (8) 3 1/2" length of fabric ("LOF") strips
• Subcut to (96) 3 1/2" squares

• Cut (4) 2 1/2" LOF strips
• Subcut to (60) 2 1/2" squares

• Cut (14) 2" wide LOF strips
• Subcut (30) 2" x 6.5" strips
• Subcut (30) 2" x 9.5" strips

• Cut (2) 14" wide LOF strips
• Subcut to (4) 14" squares (set aside left over for next step*)
• Subcut diagonally twice (as pictured below) for 16 triangles

• Cut 2, 7 1/2" squares from the left over * above
• Subcut diagonally once for 4 triangles (as pictured below)

From Border #1 Fabric

• Cut 7, 2" LOF Strips

From Border #2 Fabric

• Cut 9, 6.5" LOF strips
• Cut 8, 2.5" strips for binding

Sewing Instructions:


Large Flower Wheel - Make 24

• For each flower wheel, make (4) 5" rail fence blocks
• Choose 2 sets of 3 strips (2" x 10") from the sliced layer cake.
• Sew each set of 3 strips together, pressing seams to one side.

• Slice each set in half, for (4) 5" square rail fences.

• Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each of the 3 1/2" background squares and another line 1/2" away.

• In the upper right hand corner of each 5" square rail fence block, sew a 3 1/2" background square diagonally. Then go back and sew a second seam on the other line.

• Cut away excess between the two seams and press the blocks open. Because you have already sewn a second line, the leftovers can be opened for HST's for bonus projects later.

• Assemble the Large Flower Wheel, following the picture layout below.

ASSEMBLY - Small Flower Wheel (Finishes at 9"), Make 15

For each small flower wheel, make 4, 3 1/2" square rail fence blocks.

• Choose 2 sets of (2) 2" x 10" strips
• Sew each set of 2 together (for 2 strip sets) pressing seams to one side.
• Slice each set 3 1/2" to make (4) 3 1/2" square rail fences.
• Draw a diagonal line across each of the 2 1/2" squares.
• In the upper right hand corner of each 3 1/2" square rail fence, sew the 2 1/2" background square diagonally and cut away the excess.

Assemble the Small Flower Wheel, following the picture layout below.

Frame the Small Flower Wheel with the background strips, 2" x 6 1/2", pressing seams to the outside. Then sew the 2" x 9 1/2" strips to the top and bottom, press seams to the outside.




Top Assembly - Diagonal Setting

• 4 - Large Flower Wheel Blocks across, 6 down
• 3 - Small Flower Wheel Blocks across, 5 down
• 16 - set in triangles for sides, top and bottom
• 4 - 1/2 square triangles for corners

Border #1

• Join 2" strips diagonally
• Cut (2) 76 1/2" long for sides, and (2) 54" long for top and bottom

Border #2

• Join 6 1/2" strips together diagonally
• Cut 2, 79 1/2" long for sides, and 2, 66" long for top and bottom

Sandwich, quilt as desired, and add binding.

Finished Blocks, 9"

Finished Quilt: 66" x 91 1/2"
