Hello! This is Jera {quiltingintherain.com} bringing you this fun weekend rug project that requires just 1 jelly roll. Make a free rug for yourself by checking out my blog for a jelly roll giveaway! I used the collection ‘Wild Rose’ by Blackbird Designs. It makes a beautiful rug to display in your sewing room or to put by the fireplace. Seven simple steps below! Oh, and there's a surprise bonus picture at the bottom of the tutorial ;-p

- 1 Jelly Roll
- *Non-slip liner for drawers, enough to cover 20”x30”
- Scrap backing fabric, measuring 20”x30”

Step 1 – From your jelly roll, choose 28 strips and do the following:

Step 2 – Cut the backing fabric.
From your scrap fabric, cut a 20”x30” rectangle. I used a semi-thick fabric.

Step 3 – Place the 30” long strips along the length of the backing fabric and pin at the ends. Sew a ¼” seam to keep in place. Continue until you’ve attached all 16 strips.

Step 4 – Take your 20” long strips and weave along the width, over and under the 30” long strips you attached in the previous step. Pin as you weave them to keep them in place.

For each strip, sew a zig-zag stitch to secure the weave. I pinned and sewed 3 strips at a time.

Step 5 – After you’ve finished weaving in all of the 20” strips and sewing zig-zag stitches along the width of the rug, go back and sew zig-zag stitch along the length as well. Trim off excess strips that hang over the 20”x30” backing.
Step 6 – From your non-slip liner, cut a 20”x30” rectangle and pin to the back of your rug to keep in place.

Step 7 – Lastly, bind the rug using leftover jelly roll strips as described in Oda May's Binding with a Jelly Roll tutorial.

One fabulous 20"x30" rug!
Bonus picture!

My dog Paige has grown very fond of the woven jelly roll rug. :)
Don't forget to check out my blog for a chance to win a jelly roll!

Just a heads up on washing...drawer liner does fine in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, but NO HOT DRYERS!!! Don't ask me how I know.
Thank you foe such a great tutorial. I really need one of these and it looks like it will be fun to make, I will get my daughter to help me, I may make a few of these.

This is the most unique and beautiful project that I've seen in a long time. Thank you!
My daughter and I are so excited about this tutorial! We are going to try it as soon as the ice melts and we can buy a jelly roll. I have a feeling that this will make some great gifts for grandparents. Thanks for sharing

Way to go Jera! I saw your post about this on your blog a while ago. Just last night, I was thinking "I wonder when it will be up on MBS?" It's great! Thanks for sharing.
Very cool! I love the look of it!
Almost too beautiful to walk on, and a nice easy project!
this is really cute! I could use this with leftover jelly roll scraps!
I just loveeee this!!
Thanks,
Billie
I love it!
So pretty! I cant quite convince myself to make something that I will step one out of a lovely jelly roll... but maybe one day when I realize that the fabric I have stashed together for 50 quilts should be utilized in other ways haha. Regardless, this is BEAUTIFUL and I love the idea!
It's really cute, but I don't think I can walk on that beautiful fabric
Great idea, I'm thinking this would be a great stash-reducer too. Thank you!
what a lovely idea! that is such a cute rug. Hope I win the jelly roll! thank you for the tutorial.
How creative! I love it!
ooooooh, very nice! This might be quick enough for me to actually make it, what with my short attention span lately. :)
Such a beautiful rug- but it is much too cute for my often snow laden entry- I think it will go perfectly in my bathroom though! Thanks for sharing!
This is a great idea! Thank you for sharing the tutorial. I have been wanting to make a rug but couldn't figure out what to use for the backing.
This is a good project for me to start! That's very nice of you. Thanks for sharing it to us.
I would love to have a beautiful rug like this. Now I need to find a jelly roll! Thank you for sharing such a NEAT project.
A very unique and awesome project! I want to make one!
I love your rug!!! I've been intrigued by the weaving technique and you have made it very simple to do . . . I think I may do something like this for my daughter's room. Thanks for the post!!!!
Great idea!!!
What a lovely idea. Thank you for sharing! Looks like a good spring break craft. By the way, your little dog is adorable. Corgi? I think my pets would like the rug. Toby the cat is always getting on my sewing table. The dog, Wally, likes to be in the sewing room, too.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Can't wait to make one!
Great project - I inherited a bunch of jelly rolls and have been looking for ideas to make with them - this is going on my list!
This is so awesome.I will be making this soon thanks for sharing
Hi, what a terrific idea! I think i will make one for my sewing room .Thanks for sharing. sue~n.z.
It's so very cute, and do-able, too! Thank you, Jera!
I have a little corgi too. I am definintely going to make this rug!!
So when you hand sew the binding onto the back of the rug, you're actually sewing into the rubberized drawer liner? Not a problem?
Just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. xx
Thank you all for your kind comments!
To Gina C: Yes, you are correct. You blind stitch to the rubber backing. Not a problem at all; just use a good needle. The rubber drawer lining really isn't that thick. Thanks!
-jera :)
can't wait to do this...i have a box of 2.5" strips ready to go....woo-hoo!!
Thanks for this amazing pattern Jera. It's a long time since I've found something I want to make RIGHT NOW!! I've ordered a jelly roll and can't wait to start. RuthUK
i love it! this is so doable!!!!
Beautiful fabrics and such a darling idea ~ thanks for sharing it!
I LOVE this rug! What a super cute idea. I am thinking that I might just alter it into a little carpet bag. SO much fun!! Thanks
Thanks for such a cute pattern.
I'm starting one tonight but am using 'upcycled' upholstery weight fabrics. We have 5 pets that all like to sleep in front of our Wood Burning Stove so it seemed sensible to use a heavier, durable fabric.
Thanks everyone! I'd LOVE to see how your rug turns out if any of you make one. :)

Just thinking how lovely this rug is, and then realised its with the wild rose jelly roll, which I am currently sewing into a quilt! Its a great idea and would be lovely in bold colours for a childs room.... or knowing my daughter in pinks! Thanks.
I just finished my very own woven rug, thank you so much for sharing the idea! It looks great on my porch, and it was super fun to make. Also, thanks for all your wonderful projects, I just love reading your blog :)
For the rubber backing ... are you only securing it with the basting around the edges? and nothing in the middle?
I think this will be a perfect rug to make for my bathroom! Thanks for the idea and great tutorial.
To QuiltE: Thanks for your question! Yes, the rubber backing is only secured via the binding around the edges, with nothing in the middle. Hope this helps. Thanks again!

I made this rug and it was fast and easy - I used a random collection of 2.5" strips and not a jelly roll so it wasn't quite as coordinated as the lovely one in the picture, but I like it anyway. I didn't cut the longer strips, so my rug was 20 x 40ish and was the perfect rug for my narrow 1/2 bath. Thanks so much for a great project idea!
I just finished one of these and it turned out great. I did make some changes: I didn't stitch the strips lengthwise before weaving them; it wasn't necessary if you iron them well. I zigzagged the crosswise strips as I added them (about 3 at a time as recommended), but when I was done weaving the rug, I only stitched every other lengthwise seam. Then I layered the rug on my backing (I used non-skid rug liner - no problems sewing through it with a walking foot) and stitched the remaining crosswise seams through both layers. I felt like that would hold the backing down better than just using the binding. A friend who is trying the recipe as well suggested ironing the strips so the seam is at the back (edges meet down the center back of the strip) rather than in half; this eliminates the raw edges and should make the rug more durable. Great pattern, thanks!
I am so going to try this. Already have the jelly roll picked out. Looks like so much fun.
I love this rug!! I want to make one but I just found your blog and have a question...what is a jelly roll?
A jelly roll is a coordinated set of 2.5" x 44" fabric strips. You can find them at quilt shops.
I love your tutorial. I am going to try on a smaller scale and make potholders for Christmas. Thank you for taking the time and sharing.
Thank you for this tutorial. I will make this woven rug. You've inspired!
Thank you, you've inspired! I will make this woven rug.
Would this work to make a baby quilt as well?also how thick are the strips?
Love this! I'm heading out tonight to a Pinterest Party and this is what I will be working on for my new house.
I would think this would make an awesome lap blanket or baby blanket if made using flannel strips. I wonder if it would be possible to iron them so that the cut edge won't be seen and then no stiching down the length either before weaving. I'm not a sewer, but I hink even I might be able to make this! :-) So cute!
How did I miss this a year ago! Love the idea. Thanks!
This is SO beautiful! I think it would be a great idea for a baby quilt!

Great idea and I love the rug.
I am getting ready to make mine.... Now ! Very nice looking rugs.
this is fantastic instructions. I have done one similar. You can adjust if you want to make a quilt you can adjust the size and put a fabric backing. keep making square to desired size joining each of them and it's beautiful also.
I just finished this, and my daughters think it is too beautiful to use as a rug! I am putting the rug in the family gift exchange, and am sure it will be a popular item.
What a beautiful rug! I'm sure my cat will love it as she always lays on anything I happen to be working on! I'm going to look for nautical prints to match my family room. I'm actually thinking that if my rug comes out really nice I may attempt to make a runner. Thanks for the tutorial.
It is very beautiful! Great idea. I feel dumb asking (especially since I scrolled through all the comments to see if anyone else asked), but when you sew the strips the long way are you sewing WRONG sides together? I think the answer is yes. At first glance, I couldn't tell. I think because your colors are so soft and muted. I need to read the directions again maybe. Anyway, I see this is an old post so I understand if you never answer.
Well I finished one of these this weekend, had planned on two but didn't realize how long it would take me! Still have the strips for the second so I'll get to it I'm sure. Also I cut strips from yardage rather using jelly roll so partially my own fault. I'm very happy with how it turned out and it was worth the time and pinning pinning pinning. I did sew the rubber mat to the backing before binding it to make sure it was nice and flat. If I do a second I may even put the rubber back on before I run some of the zig zags through it so it stays flat to the back of the rug. Great project!
I am confused on step one it says they need to be 30" long but then you say to fold in half. If I did that they would only be 15". And how wide should the pre-cut strips be? they make several different sizes. Thank you.
:)
I love how this turned out. It's beautiful.
Dear Robynhood
By now you may have found out how to fold the strips. They are to be folded lengthwise....."long ways". This will give you a long-30"-narrower strip. I hope this helps you.
This is fabulous, thank you.
I just love this idea! I'm going to make one for my granddaughters room. Has anyone washed theirs yet? Does it wash week with the raw edges exposed? Thanks for sharing and any other info.
I LOVE this way of creating fabric, not just a rug! I'm thinking that if I cut thrift store sheets (flannel) I could turn them into pillowcases or, as someone suggested, a baby blanket. I crochet so I can envision adding a crochet thread edging ... To the person who asked if the seams could be hidden, and/or sewn on the inside, I think you can do both. It would probably give the finished item a more polished look, I think. Just my 2 vents' worth!
Why do you only 1/4" seam the 30" strips and not the 20" strips????
Valinda, I reread the instructions and it says to press and sew the 1/4" seam on "all of the above strips" which includes the 20" strips. I was confused too.... lol
Good morning your blog is wonderful , congratulations
Look at this pictures are so fun. Enjoyed
Make a great and happy wednesday
