Layer Cake Log Cabin Quilt

Hello again.  I’m Trish from notes of sincerity and am so excited to share my latest tutorial with you today.  I just love creating simple and fun quilt patterns using Moda’s fabulous pre-cuts.  Today’s tutorial will be using a Color Me Happy by V and Co. layer cake and just a smidge of yardage.  Shall we get started?!

blocks: Color Me Happy Layer Cake
centers of log cabin blocks: 1/4 yard Bella Solids – bleached white 97
sashing and borders: 1 1/4 yard Bella Solids – Popsicle
corner stones and binding: 3/4 yard Color Me Happy Multi
backing: 4 yards Bella Solids – lime

cutting instructions
* cut all 42 layer cake squares into 5 – 2″ x 10″ strips

subcut all 42 layer cake squares into 2 – 2″ x 4″ strips, 2 – 2″ x 5 1/2″ strips, 1 – 2″ x 2 1/2″ strip, 2 – 2″ x 7″ strips, 1 – 2″ x 8 1/2″ strip

subcut all 42 layer cake squares into 2 – 2″ x 4″ strips, 2 – 2″ x 5 1/2″ strips, 1 – 2″ x 2 1/2″ strip, 2 – 2″ x 7″ strips, 1 – 2″ x 8 1/2″ strip

* cut Bella Solid bleached white into 3 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips

there will be 16 per strip you need 42
* cut Color Me Happy Multi into 2 – 2″ x WOF strips,
subcut strips into 2″ squares you will need 30 (for corner stones)
then cut 7 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips (for binding)

* cut Bella Solids – lime into 2 – 72″ x WOF strips

sewing instructions

 sew 1 – 2″ x 2 1/2″ strip to the 2 1/2″ white center square, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 4″ strip to top, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 4″ strip to left side, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 5 1/2″ strip to bottom, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 5 1/2″ strip to right side, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 7″ strip to top, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 7″ strip to left side, press

sew 1 – 2″ x 8 1/2″ strip to bottom, press

block should measure 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, make 42

note : to save time and thread use the chain piecing method while making your blocks

Once you have all the blocks sewn, this is a great time to layout each block with sashing and corner stones to see what order you like best.

Sew blocks and sashing.  Press sashing away from blocks.  Then sew sashing and corner stones.  Press sashing away from corner stones.  This way you will get a nice snuggly fit while sewing your sashing to the rows.

I prefer to pin my sashing to each row I am sewing it to.  Making sure to the seams nest into one another.

Sew each sashing row to the block rows.  Press.
For the borders, sew the 7 strips end to end and press.  Cut two strips at 59″ and two more strips at 68.5″.  Sew top and bottom borders and press.  Sew each side and press.
Quilt and bind.
