Hi wendelabra, I'm glad your project turned out well and sorry for the frustration you experienced! I like the 10" square template because it's a little wider block. It doesn't have to be square, so maybe that's where I could have clarified better. You could use a different sized template for a slightly different look.

I made this ironing board cover and absolutely love how it turned out. However, I am still confused as to why we make or use a 10" cardboard template. When I cut out the tubes to make the squares I had to measure at 8 and about 3/4" in order to get a square. When you sew 3 - 2 1/2" strips together you end up with a 6 1/2" piece then when you sew that with the other one to make

Last year my husband made me a big board that I lay over the ironing board resting a couple of inches on the sewing table but wanted a new cover for this and this will be perfect with just making it wider and longer. On the pattern I found for this board it is 30.5 x 60 inches and I used an infant mattress pad and covered it with fabric then stapled it to the back of the board.

Man, am I going to show I am a newbie!! If you sew the long ends together to make a tube (step 2 I think) it is only open on the 2 short ends. Then how do you open the squares after you cut them. Wouldn't the point be closed also?
