I was wondering how you cut your layer cake into 3 1/3? My ruler only is in 8ths and mathematically it does not work out to be 3 even pieces. Is there a rular out there that is not in 8ths?

I just finished this quilt last week, my first quilt too, but have a question. I was advised to leave an area no larger than a fist un-quilted. As there are full squares not quilted, have you found this to be a problem in washing it?
