Hi Vickie.

Using a walking foot ensures that all layers of fabric will move under your needle at the same time.

You could use a normal foot, but you risk the chance of having one or both layers of your fabrics shift. Which in turn, makes for either bulk or wonky stitching.

I saw one similar to this but they used fabric spray adhesive and quilted it at the same time as sewing it...it was on Quilt Taffy. Love this one though, so easy! I also love the colors :)

I created a pattern (which I currently have cut and pinned waiting to be sewed) almost identical to this!

I used 1 layer cake and 2 charm packs of Fresh. I cut the second charm pack in half and then took one half to make quarters. I layered 40 squares like this but I'm going to sash around each square using the 2.5x5 pieces left over from the second charm pack in the corners.

Very Cute! Another variation that would give you a more scraggly (is that a word) scraggly look would be to sew a cris-cross seam to hold all three layers together from corner to corner.
